Burlington County Freeholder Chris Brown recently donated a portion of his freeholder salary to the Willingboro VFW Post 4914 and the Pemberton Senior's Organization. This was part of Brown's commitment to donate his elected official's salary, which originated when he was Deputy Mayor of Evesham.
"From the moment I was elected to public office, my only goal was to enhance the lives of Burlington County residents," said Brown. "I am proud to have the opportunity to not only serve, but to give something back."
On Friday, February 27th, 2009 at the 50th Anniversary of Willingboro, VFW Post 4914, Freeholder Chris Brown presented a Proclamation from the Burlington County Freeholders saluting the current and past members for their service to their country and community. Not only did Freeholder Brown give praise to the Men and Women of VFW Post 4914, Brown also announced that he would donate a $1,000.00 of his Freeholder salary to the Post. "The men and women of VFW Post 4914 have given so much of themselves to our country and community for so many years, it was my small way to thank them," said Freeholder Brown.
After learning from Council President Diane Stiney and Councilwomen Sherry Scull that Pemberton Township may have to reduce their senior budget, Freeholder Chris Brown today met with the Seniors and presented them a personal check in the amount of $1,000.00.
"I just couldn't let the seniors in Pemberton down, like seniors through out our Country, they have been hit hard by the economic conditions" said Freeholder Brown. Last year the all Republican Freeholder Board decided to reduce County transportation to Seniors and Vets and then this year voted to increase the bus fares for the BurLink and BCTS.
"When I presented the check to the Seniors the look on their faces was filled with hope, that someone in Government understands their circumstances and wants to help," said Brown.
At the February 11th, 2009 Freeholder meeting Freeholder Director Joseph Donnelly (R) announced he would be asking the Freeholders to eliminate their salary as a means to "shrink the size of government". While Brown doesn't disagree with the spirit of eliminating his salary but rather wants to donate his salary to various non-profit community organizations and worthy county projects that he chooses. When Freeholder Brown was Deputy Mayor of Evesham he did exactly the same thing.
In 2007 Brown had donated his salary to the Marlton Seniors, the Center for the Arts of South Jersey, and the RAPP Room (substance abuse awareness program for kids) as well as pay for a feasibility study to connect Main Street to Old Marlton Pike. - A project centered around the NJDOT Marlton Elimination Project. "It is extremely important to me to know that my salary is going to get to the people and the projects that need it the most. If we eliminate the salary totally I fear the money will be lost in government bureaucracy" said Freeholder Brown.
The 12 Organizations Chris Brown has chosen to receive a portion of his Freeholder Salary are:
Pemberton Seniors
Willingboro-VFW Post 4914
Marlton Seniors
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of South Jersey
Moorestown Seniors
Delran--VFW Post 3020
The Center for the Arts of South Jersey
The 200 Club of Burlington County
The Evesham Education Foundation
The Yellow Ribbon Club
Medford--VFW Post 7677
One Child Saved
"Each organization will be presented a check sometime throughout the year and the amounts given will be for a minimum of $500.00", said Brown.
